Ohio State Seeks New Offensive Line Coach After Justin Frye Moves to NFL

Ohio State is now searching for its second new assistant coach this offseason following the departure of offensive line coach Justin Frye, who has accepted a position with the Arizona Cardinals. Frye’s exit marks the second loss from the Buckeyes’ 2024 national championship coaching staff, as defensive coordinator Jim Knowles also left earlier this offseason.

Frye’s move to the NFL aligns with his strengths, as he excelled in developing Ohio State’s offensive line despite numerous injuries, transforming the unit into a championship-caliber group in 2024. While Buckeye fans had previously criticized his recruiting efforts during his three-year tenure in Columbus, the NFL provides Frye with an opportunity to focus solely on player development and strategic planning, areas where he has proven his expertise.

As Ohio State begins its search for a replacement, both internal and external candidates are being considered. Dan Hope and Andy Anders of *Eleven Warriors* have identified several potential fits for the role. Among the possibilities is Kevin Wilson, the former Tulsa head coach who previously worked with the Buckeyes from 2017 to 2022. Wilson has extensive experience with offensive lines and could also serve as a ready-made offensive coordinator if Chip Kelly departs for an NFL position.

Another notable candidate is LeCharles Bentley, a former Ohio State center and Rimington Trophy winner. Currently serving as a senior adviser for player performance and development in the NFL, Bentley has strong connections within the offensive line coaching community, though he lacks prior college coaching experience. Other names in the mix include Notre Dame’s Joe Rudolph, Penn State’s Phil Trautwein, and Tennessee’s Glen Elarbee, all of whom have established reputations in the college ranks. Internally, quality control coach Tim Drevno could also be considered for a promotion.
