Ohio State Fans Applaud Brian Hartline’s Promotion to Offensive Coordinator

Following Chip Kelly’s departure to the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this week, Ohio State faced a crucial decision regarding its offensive leadership. Who would step up as the primary play-caller for the reigning national champions in 2025? While several names were floated as potential candidates, the Buckeyes opted for an internal promotion, choosing one of the most logical and well-deserving options—Brian Hartline.

Hartline has been a key figure in Ohio State’s coaching staff since 2017, starting as an offensive quality control analyst before earning a promotion to wide receivers coach. His impact on the program has been undeniable, playing a major role in the development of elite pass-catchers and establishing himself as one of the best recruiters in the nation. His efforts have helped secure top-tier talents like Marvin Harrison Jr., Jeremiah Smith, and 2026 five-star prospect Chris Henry Jr.

While Hartline’s reputation as a receiver coach and recruiter is well established, his ability to take over as the primary offensive play-caller remains untested. However, the general reaction from fans to Wednesday’s announcement was clear: this move was long overdue.

Hartline’s first major challenge will be maintaining the offensive firepower that defined last season, despite significant roster turnover. With key players like quarterback Will Howard, running backs Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson, and wide receiver Emeka Egbuka all heading to the NFL, the Buckeyes will need to reload. Fortunately, Ohio State still boasts exceptional talent, led by star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith—arguably the top player in the nation—and likely starting quarterback Julian Sayin, a highly touted five-star recruit.

This promotion not only gives Hartline the opportunity to prove himself as an offensive coordinator but could also set the stage for a future head coaching role if he meets expectations.
