STARKVILLE, MS – The Mississippi State Bulldogs football program continues to build momentum in its 2026 recruiting class, officially landing a commitment from talented safety Kolby Barrett out of Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Barrett announced his pledge to the Bulldogs on Saturday, becoming the latest significant addition to Jeff Lebby’s burgeoning class.
Barrett, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound defensive back, chose Mississippi State over more than a dozen offers, including Power Four programs like Georgia Tech, Purdue, and Vanderbilt. His commitment comes swiftly after an official visit to Starkville, solidifying the strong impression the Bulldogs’ coaching staff made on him. He was last in Starkville on April 5th for spring practice, indicating a consistent and effective recruitment effort by the new staff.
“It was about their plan for the program,” Barrett explained regarding his decision. “Talking with Coach (Jeff) Lebby and Coach (Matt) Barnes, I love the plan they have and I feel like it is a good fit for me.”
For Mississippi State, Barrett’s commitment is a crucial piece in shaping the future of their secondary. He’s rated as a three-star prospect by On3.com and 247Sports, with rankings placing him among the top safeties in the nation and a highly-regarded recruit in Tennessee. His film from Baylor School showcases a versatile safety capable of playing both in the box and in coverage, demonstrating good instincts, tackling ability, and ball skills. During his last season, Barrett tallied 63 tackles, 10 pass breakups, four interceptions, and a forced fumble.
Safeties coach Matt Barnes played a pivotal role in securing Barrett’s commitment. “The plan Coach Barnes had for me was good, and he has kept it real with me throughout this whole process,” Barrett added. “Mississippi State is somewhere that I am wanted, and I feel like it is a great opportunity. I will be able to play in the SEC, which is the best league, and I will have a chance to play early.”
Barrett is also eyeing an early graduation from high school, aiming to enroll at Mississippi State ahead of schedule. “To get there early and six months ahead of time is a big deal. It will help me get prepared for the college system. I think it will be good for me,” he stated, highlighting his dedication to preparing for the collegiate level.
Kolby Barrett’s commitment marks the eighth pledge for Mississippi State’s 2026 class and the second defensive back, joining Georgia native cornerback Camron Brown. It underscores the staff’s focus on securing talent early and building a strong foundation for the future of Bulldogs football under Coach Lebby.
