Now we know why they never want to schedule night games at Sanford Stadium

Georgia fans should be praying for more home night games.

Home-field advantage is a very real thing in sports. This is advantage is arguably at its greatest in college football as fanbases all across the country are as passionate about their teams as you will find in any other sport.

But the passion gets amplified even more in the SEC, especially at a powerhouse program like Georgia where fans are obsessed with football every day of the year.

So knowing how passionate Georgia fans are about their team, one would assume that the Bulldogs do very well at home. And that is most certainly the case as most years the team goes undefeated (or close to, at home. But how does Georgia do in night games under the lights at home when the atmosphere in Sanford Stadium reaches its peak?

Their record under Kirby Smart may surprise you.

Georgia undefeated under the lights under Smart

In a stat that might be a little surprising, Georgia is a perfect 16-0 under the lights at Sanford Stafium during Smart’s tenure. Now most Georgia fans would assume UGA’s record would be pretty strong in these games because of how great the Bulldogs have been in recent years, but no one could have predicted they were 16-0.

A few games immediately come to mind that are part of this perfect record including Georgia’s most recent home game, the eight overtime thriller against Georgia Tech this past season. Another game that comes to mind is Georgia’s electric 23-17 win over Notre Dame back in 2019.

How long will Georgia be able to keep this streak alive? UGA typically only has a couple home night games every year, and more often than not they’re against some of the best teams in their schedule. There’s a chance both Alabama and Texas could be night games this coming season, and both teams present a serious threat to break this perfect streak.

But if history repeats itself, Georgia should feel confident going into these games (or any game for that matter) if they are under the lights in Athens.
