Notre Dame Celebrates Marcus Freeman’s Recognition After National Championship Run
Notre Dame wrapped up an impressive season with an 11-1 record, earning the No. 7 seed in the College Football Playoff. The Fighting Irish defeated three tough opponents, including No. 2 Georgia and No. 6 Penn State, to reach the national championship game against No. 8 Ohio State. Despite a hard-fought effort, they fell 34-23 to the Buckeyes, keeping the game more competitive than Ohio State’s other postseason matchups.
Though the loss and the departure of defensive coordinator Al Golden to the NFL were setbacks, Notre Dame had reason to celebrate on Wednesday night. Head coach Marcus Freeman was honored with the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award, recognizing his leadership and the team’s first national title appearance since 2003.
Notre Dame shared its congratulations with the message: “The Golden Standard.”
Freeman, who took over as head coach in December 2021 after Brian Kelly’s departure to LSU, has led the Irish to consistent success. This season’s 14-2 finish brings his overall record to 33-10. His first national championship appearance was particularly meaningful, as it came against his alma mater, Ohio State.
Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day spoke highly of Freeman ahead of the title game, saying: “Everybody at Ohio State respects Marcus … He’s a tremendous coach and does an unbelieva
ble job.”
