Former Husson Baseball Coach ‘Humbled and Honored’ to Take Over at Notre Dame
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – In a move that has sent ripples through the collegiate baseball world, former Husson University head baseball coach Mike Laverty has officially been named the new head coach of the University of Notre Dame baseball program. Laverty, who led Husson to multiple North Atlantic Conference (NAC) championships and postseason appearances, expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to join one of the most prestigious athletic programs in the country.
“I’m incredibly humbled and honored to be chosen as the head coach at Notre Dame,” Laverty said during a press conference at Frank Eck Stadium on Thursday. “This is a dream come true, not just for me, but for everyone who has supported me throughout my coaching journey—from my family and players to the administration at Husson.”
Laverty brings a reputation for developing disciplined, fundamentally sound teams, a trait that has become his hallmark over a 15-year coaching career. At Husson, he compiled an impressive record, turning a small Division III program in Bangor, Maine, into a regional powerhouse. His teams were known for their gritty play, academic excellence, and a strong sense of camaraderie.
While acknowledging the leap from Division III to a powerhouse ACC program, Laverty made it clear he’s ready for the challenge.
“Notre Dame is synonymous with excellence—on the field, in the classroom, and in the community,” he said. “I intend to carry forward that tradition and build upon the incredible work done by those who came before me.”
Laverty replaces former Irish head coach Shawn Stiffler, who departed after three seasons to pursue an opportunity in professional baseball. Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick cited Laverty’s leadership, player development skills, and vision for the future of the program as key reasons for the hire.
“Coach Laverty is a proven winner, a developer of talent, and someone who aligns perfectly with the values of Notre Dame,” Swarbrick said. “We’re confident he will lead our student-athletes to new heights.”
Former Husson players have already taken to social media to congratulate their former coach, describing him as “a mentor,” “a class act,” and “a game-changer.”
As Laverty prepares to relocate to South Bend, one thing is clear—Notre Dame baseball is entering a new era, guided by a coach who knows what it means to build from the ground up and lead with humility.
