The South Carolina Gamecocks have long been a successful athletic program, but the women’s basketball program, under the leadership of legendary head coach Dawn Staley, has achieved extraordinary success.
Despite the Gamecocks falling short in this past season’s national championship game against UConn, Staley has guided the team to an impressive 475-110 record over her 17 years with the program.
Under her leadership, the Gamecocks have won three national titles, made five consecutive Final Four appearances, and participated in 13 NCAA Tournaments. Her impact extends far beyond the court, as her influence in the city of Columbia has been unparalleled. On Wednesday, she was honored for all of her remarkable accomplishments.
The statue honors more than just her success as a coach. While that’s how many have come to know her, Dawn Staley has also been a pivotal figure in the community and a role model for future generations. This was highlighted in a news release ahead of the statue’s unveiling.
This tribute celebrates not only her championship legacy as a coach and player, but also her unwavering commitment to leadership, community empowerment and uplifting future generations,” a news release read. “Dawn Staley’s influence continues to inspire both on and off the court, and this statue stands as a lasting.”
