Big Ten Opponents Michigan Avoids in 2025

The Wolverines won’t have to face Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Oregon, Penn State, Rutgers, or UCLA this season. While avoiding Oregon and Penn State is a relief, missing Indiana—coming off a College Football Playoff appearance—adds an interesting twist. Still, skipping Illinois and Iowa works in Michigan’s favor.

Michigan’s 2025 Schedule: The Pros and Cons

The Good

Michigan gets to host Ohio State in Ann Arbor, which is always a boost, even if home-field advantage doesn’t always dictate the outcome in this rivalry. The team also has a favorable stretch where they remain in the state of Michigan for an entire month, making travel less of a factor.

Their road schedule isn’t too daunting—matchups against Northwestern and Maryland are manageable, and Washington had a losing record last season. Overall, the slate offers a balance that could work in Michigan’s favor.

The Bad

Opening the season at Oklahoma is a major challenge. After a quieter season following their national championship run, the Wolverines aim to return to dominance, but an early loss could shake their momentum.

The first half of the season features tricky road trips to Oklahoma, Nebraska, and USC, which could prove difficult. Additionally, Michigan never plays two consecutive home games all season, making consistency a challenge.

Best and Worst Case Scenarios for Michigan

Best Case Scenario

Michigan returns to top form, setting the tone with a statement win at Oklahoma. From there, they dominate at home and drop only one close road game—perhaps against Michigan State. They advance to the Big Ten Championship and secure a College Football Playoff spot after a fifth straight victory over Ohio State.

Worst Case Scenario

If Michigan struggles early, a loss at Oklahoma could lead to setbacks against Nebraska and USC. If they fail to win close games, they could also drop the rivalry matchup against Michigan State, frustrating the fan base. While they still make a bowl game, the season falls short of expectations, ending with a crushing loss to Ohio State that breaks their winning streak in The Game.

Prediction for the 2025 Season

Although much will be made about Michigan’s road matchups against Oklahoma and other marquee opponents, the schedule is still manageable. Last season, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Wisconsin, USC, Washington, and Michigan State weren’t particularly dominant, making all of these games winnable.

Expect Michigan to lose one game, finally drop a game to Ohio State, but still earn an at-large College Football Playoff berth.

This prediction will be updated throughout the offseason.
