In a jaw-dropping turn of events, four-star linebacker McKay Madsen from Clovis North High School in California has committed to Brigham Young University (BYU), leaving powerhouse programs Oregon and UCLA in the dust. The announcement came during the halftime of the Navy All-American Bowl, broadcast nationally on NBC, where Madsen donned the Cougars’ cap, signaling his unexpected decision.
Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 235 pounds, Madsen is not just a defensive powerhouse. In his senior year, he rushed for 1,238 yards and 19 touchdowns, averaging an impressive 8.8 yards per carry. Defensively, he recorded 49 tackles and four interceptions, showcasing his versatility on the field.
But Madsen’s athletic prowess doesn’t stop at football. He made history by winning back-to-back California state championships in both discus and shot put, a feat not achieved since 1922.
When asked about his choice, Madsen emphasized the genuine love and culture at BYU, stating, “It always felt like home and is the place I need to be.”
Madsen plans to serve a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints before joining the Cougars in the 2027 season.
This commitment marks a significant win for BYU’s recruiting efforts, adding a top-tier talent to their roster and signaling a bright future for the program.
