Massive Update on FSU Football’s Doak Campbell Stadium $265M Renovation

Florida State University (FSU) is undergoing a significant transformation of its iconic Doak Campbell Stadium, with a $265 million renovation aimed at enhancing the fan experience and modernizing facilities.

Project Overview

Initiated in 2023, the renovation encompasses several key upgrades:

Seating Enhancements: The west and south sides of the stadium are receiving new seating, including club seats. These improvements will reduce the stadium’s capacity to under 70,000 but aim to provide a more comfortable and modern viewing experience.

Dunlap Football Center: A state-of-the-art facility is under construction to offer advanced training and locker room amenities for student-athletes, supporting their development on and off the field.

Structural and Safety Upgrades: Renovations include widening seats on the east and west sidelines to 18 inches, adding handrails, and increasing legroom to 34 inches in select areas, aiming to enhance comfort and safety for all attendees.

Financial Updates

As of early March 2025, construction is approximately 60% complete. Athletic Director Michael Alford reported that only 42% of the financed debt has been utilized, resulting in an expected $30 million in savings. These funds are allocated for additional upgrades, including obsolete infrastructure, technology, and equipment replacements throughout the stadium.

Timeline and Impact

The renovation is on track for completion by late July 2025, ahead of FSU’s season opener against Alabama on August 30. However, spring events, including the annual spring game, have been canceled due to ongoing construction. Some long-time ticket holders may also be affected by seating changes resulting from the renovations.

Fan Engagement and Future Plans

FSU emphasizes maintaining fan engagement during the renovation period. Alford highlighted the importance of enhancing the game-day experience, noting that 60% of fans travel over three and a half hours to attend games. Post-renovation, the stadium will feature improved sightlines, upgraded seating options, and enhanced amenities.

The project also aims to make Doak Campbell Stadium a year-round venue by facilitating events beyond football, such as concerts and motocross. Discussions with promoters are underway to host events starting in spring 2026.
