BYU fans received some concerning news this week as star linebacker Mason Riggs has been sidelined with an ankle injury. Riggs, a key figure in BYU’s defensive lineup, suffered the injury during a late preseason practice. While early reports indicate the sprain is minor, he is expected to miss the team’s first 2–3 weeks of the season.
Riggs has been a standout performer for the Cougars over the past seasons. Known for his physicality, speed, and ability to read offenses, he is often the player opponents fear most on the defensive side of the ball. Losing him for the early games could impact BYU’s defensive rhythm, particularly against teams that rely on aggressive passing attacks.
Head coach Kalani Sitake commented on the injury, emphasizing optimism: “Mason is a fighter. This is a setback, but it’s not a long-term concern. Our focus now is on his recovery and making sure he comes back stronger. We have capable players ready to step in and keep our defense competitive.”
Backup linebackers and other defensive starters will need to fill the void in Riggs’ absence. This could provide an opportunity for younger or less experienced players to showcase their skills and contribute to the team early in the season. While the Cougars may face some challenges without their star linebacker, the coaching staff is confident in the depth of the roster.
BYU’s fans are encouraged to stay positive and patient. With proper rest, treatment, and rehabilitation, Mason Riggs is expected to return to full strength within weeks. His presence will be crucial as BYU aims for a strong start and contends for the top positions in their conference.
For now, all eyes are on Riggs’ recovery, and fans are hopeful that their defensive leader will be back on the field quickly, ready to make the impact that has made him a fan favorite.
