In a game marked by physicality, defensive grit, and momentum swings, the Spartans leaned heavily on their veteran leadership and trademark resilience to overcome a relentless Rebels team that refused to back down. With the win, Michigan State advances to the Elite Eight for the 12th time under Hall of Fame coach Tom Izzo, who once again proved why he is one of college basketball’s premier March tacticians.
A Battle from the Tip
From the opening whistle, it was clear this would be no easy road for Michigan State. Ole Miss came out aggressive, attacking the paint and controlling the tempo. Guard Matthew Murrell led the Rebels with 21 points, slicing through the Spartans’ defense and giving his team an early edge.
But Michigan State responded with poise. Senior guard Tyson Walker, the heart and soul of this Spartan team, shouldered the offensive load with 24 points, including a critical three-pointer with just under two minutes to play that gave MSU a 67–64 lead. His backcourt mate, A.J. Hoggard, added 14 points and six assists, helping to keep the offense fluid despite constant pressure.
Second-Half Surge
Trailing by five at halftime, Michigan State tightened its defensive screws in the second half. Mady Sissoko and Malik Hall anchored the interior, combining for 18 rebounds and altering multiple Ole Miss attempts at the rim. The Spartans’ trademark rebounding and hustle plays began to shift the momentum midway through the second half.
A key turning point came with just over six minutes remaining. Down 59–58, Michigan State went on a 9–2 run fueled by defensive stops and transition buckets. The sequence culminated in a thunderous alley-oop from Hoggard to Hall, electrifying the Spartan faithful and forcing an Ole Miss timeout.
Closing It Out
Despite a late push by the Rebels, Michigan State’s composure in the closing minutes made the difference. Walker calmly hit free throws to seal the game, and the Spartans’ defense clamped down, allowing just one field goal in the final 2:30 of play.
After the game, Coach Izzo praised his team’s effort and character.
“This group has battled all year, and tonight they showed what Spartan basketball is all about—toughness, togetherness, and the will to win,” Izzo said. “Ole Miss played a heck of a game, but we made plays when we had to.”
Looking Ahead
With the victory, Michigan State will now face the winner of the Texas vs. Marquette matchup in the Elite Eight. As the tournament narrows and the spotlight grows brighter, Izzo’s squad looks more and more like a team built for the big stage.
