Miami Celebrates the ‘Happiest Team in America’: 1985 Baseball Champions
The University of Miami recently honored its 1985 National Championship baseball team during a special ceremony. This team, affectionately dubbed “The Happiest Team in America” by their legendary coach Ron Fraser, secured the program’s second national title with a decisive 10-6 victory over the Texas Longhorns in the College World Series.
The commemoration brought together former players and coaches, allowing them to relive the memories of their remarkable season. The 1985 Hurricanes, who finished with an impressive 64-16 record, were celebrated for their exceptional teamwork and spirited play. Catcher Greg Ellena was notably recognized for his outstanding performance in the College World Series, earning the Most Valuable Player award. His heroic two-run home run in an earlier elimination game against Mississippi State was also fondly remembered.
Adding to the nostalgia, current Hurricanes head coach J.D. Arteaga, a Miami native, spoke of his admiration for the 1985 team and drew parallels with the spirit of the present squad. The event served as an inspiring reminder of the program’s rich history and the enduring legacy of the 1985 champions.
