𝑳𝒆𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝑰𝒏 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒑𝒐𝒕𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕: Netflix to Premiere Powerful Documentary Honoring BYU Icon LaVell Edwards
In a move that’s already generating buzz across both college football and streaming communities, Netflix has announced the upcoming premiere of a feature-length documentary chronicling the life and legacy of legendary BYU head coach LaVell Edwards. Titled “Faith, Football & Forever: The LaVell Edwards Legacy,” the film will debut globally in December 2025, perfectly timed with the 50th anniversary of Edwards’ first season as head coach of the Cougars.
Known for revolutionizing the college passing game and putting BYU on the national map, LaVell Edwards is widely regarded as one of the most influential coaches in NCAA history. Over his 29-year career (1972–2000), Edwards compiled a stunning 257–101–3 record, led the Cougars to a national championship in 1984, and mentored a long line of elite quarterbacks, including Jim McMahon, Steve Young, and Ty Detmer.
But the Netflix documentary aims to go beyond the stats.
“This is not just a football story,” said director Mason Halberg, whose past work includes award-winning sports documentaries on the Manning family and Title IX. “LaVell’s impact reaches into faith, leadership, mentorship, and the quiet dignity of a man who built champions both on and off the field. His story is uniquely American—and uniquely BYU.”
The film includes never-before-seen footage from BYU’s archives, intimate interviews with family members, former players, rivals, and current coaches—including Kalani Sitake, who played under Edwards and now carries the torch for the program he built. Also featured are exclusive sit-downs with football icons like Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, and Steve Young, all reflecting on the quiet storm that was Coach Edwards.
Netflix has confirmed that the documentary will explore Edwards’ early years in Orem, his rise through the BYU coaching ranks, the 1984 national title run, and his decision to retire at the end of the 2000 season. It will also touch on his strong Latter-day Saint faith, his commitment to family, and how he balanced the pressures of big-time college football with humility and grace.
“This film is a thank-you to a man who changed lives—mine included,” said Sitake during a press preview. “Coach Edwards gave people like me a chance, believed in us, and helped mold us. This generation needs to know who he was.”
The announcement has sparked an emotional response from BYU fans nationwide. Social media has already lit up with the hashtag #LaVellOnNetflix, and local theaters in Utah have arranged to host special screening events in Provo, including one at LaVell Edwards Stadium, where thousands are expected to gather.
“Faith, Football & Forever” will premiere on December 4, 2025, exclusively on Netflix, with a trailer set to drop in early November.
In a time when college football is evolving rapidly, this documentary serves as a timely reminder of a man who stayed true to his values—and changed the game doing it.
