West Ham United have made it clear that they do not intend to let Leeds United target Ben Johnson depart this month. Leeds have been extensively linked with a transfer for Johnson as they seek to strengthen their backline before the February 1 deadline.
Johnson’s contract expires at the end of the season, and after struggling for playing time, there have been reports that the right-back might be on the move this month. West Ham, on the other hand, appear to have no interest in letting him go, having rejected down an approach from Premier League club Crystal Palace.
According to David Ornstein of the Athletic, the Eagles inquired about a potential transaction this month but were informed that Johnson was not for sale. The article also suggests that West Ham seek to give the defender better terms in the coming weeks to extend his stay with the club.
Johnson has rejected down previous contract offers at the London Stadium, with sources indicating that he wants to play a more major part in his career after struggling to get into the Hammers’ squad. Of course, it remains to be seen whether he will sign the new contract, but it appears like he will be sticking with the club for the rest of the season at least.
If the allegations of Leeds’ interest are genuine, it will be a setback for the Whites, who are looking to strengthen Daniel Farke’s team. Ben Godfrey, an Everton player Farke knows from his time at Norwich, has been linked with a move to Elland Road.
