Last Time Kentucky Won Men’s NCAA Tournament: Full List of Championships

The Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball team boasts a rich history, with eight NCAA Tournament championships to their name. Their most recent title came in 2012, under the leadership of head coach John Calipari. This championship run was highlighted by the exceptional play of freshman Anthony Davis, who earned honors such as the Wooden Award, Naismith Award, and Final Four Most Outstanding Player. The Wildcats concluded the season with a 38-2 record, securing both the Southeastern Conference (SEC) regular-season and tournament titles. In the national championship game, they defeated Kansas 67-59, with Davis contributing significantly despite shooting challenges.

Kentucky’s championship legacy spans several decades, with titles in 1948, 1949, 1951, 1958, 1978, 1996, 1998, and 2012. Their inaugural championships in 1948 and 1949 were secured under coach Adolph Rupp, who played a pivotal role in establishing the program’s dominance. The 1958 title was particularly memorable, with Vernon Hatton leading the team in scoring and delivering crucial performances, including a pivotal 47-foot shot against Temple in a triple-overtime victory.

The 1996 championship, achieved under coach Rick Pitino, is often referred to as the “Untouchables” season. The team, featuring standout players like Tony Delk and Antoine Walker, finished with a 34-2 record. They dominated the NCAA Tournament, with Delk’s seven 3-pointers in the championship game against Syracuse contributing to a 76-67 victory.

Despite their historical success, Kentucky has faced challenges in recent years. Since their 2012 championship, the Wildcats have reached the Final Four once, in 2015, but have not returned to the national title game. In 2024, following a series of early tournament exits, Calipari departed for the Arkansas Razorbacks. He was succeeded by former Wildcat Mark Pope, who faces the task of restoring Kentucky to its former glory.

As of March 2025, the Wildcats continue their pursuit of another championship, with fans and analysts alike eager to see if Pope can lead the team back to the pinnacle of college basketball. The upcoming NCAA Tournament will be a significant test of the Wildcats’ resilience and ambition to reclaim their status among the elite programs in the sport.
