“Larger than Life” Mississippi State baseball unveils Ron Polk statue
Though the tape measure wasn’t brought out to assure Polk got his wish, jokes were put aside when the curtains dropped to unveil a statue of a man, “larger than life,” in the eyes of MSU president Mark Keenum.Polk’s accolades made him an obvious figure worthy of the honor. His 1,373 wins are most in the SEC. He’s had six different hall of fame inductions. STARKVILLE — Ron Polk was thrilled last year when he was informed the program wanted to erect a statue of him outside the right field entrance of Dudy Noble Field. Nothing was going to upset the legendary Mississippi State baseball coach about the sculpture, with one exception.
Polk wanted the statue, which was created by retired dentist Rusty Reid, to be at least 8 feet tall. With each measurement session he had with Reid, Polk wanted to know the piece was at least a couple inches taller than the statues behind the home plate entrance of his former players Rafael Palmeiro and Will Clark
