Lane Kiffin is paying attention to the NCAA Baseball Tournament bracket. In fact, he seems to believe there are some lessons to be learned in college football from the bracket reveal.
On Monday, the path to the College World Series in Omaha was set, and the bracket is heavily dominated by the SEC. The conference placed a total of 13 teams in the final field, including 8 regional host sites.That means the SEC will host half of the 16 regionals to start the tournament. Beyond that, the SEC grabbed 6 of the top 8 seeds, meaning the SEC could host the majority of the Super Regionals should those teams advance.
What does that have to do with Lane Kiffin or Ole Miss football? Well, the head coach reacted to the heavy seeding in favor of the SEC on social media. He referenced “a system to get the best teams” before tagging the College Football Playoff account.There is something to be said about the contrast in formats between the CFP and the NCAA Baseball Tournament. There are no automatic seedings for conference champions, as evidenced by the SEC sweeping the top 4 national seeds in this year’s tournament.
Granted, there are some massive differences across the sports, but it’s undeniable that many were left a bit unhappy by the seeding format in the first version of the 12-team Playoff. That’s likely on the way to being changed, but Kiffin did not miss the chance to get a crack in after Ole Miss narrowly missed the field last year.
