Kentucky Football Adds Veteran Greg Frey as Assistant Offensive Line Coach 🍂
LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 25, 2025) — Head coach Mark Stoops has bolstered the Wildcats’ line room by naming seasoned offensive line specialist Greg Frey (pronounced “Fry”) as assistant offensive line coach, pairing him with veteran O-line coach Eric Wolford for the upcoming 2025 season.
A Proven Track Record Across the Country
Frey arrives at Kentucky after two seasons at Tulsa, where he shifted from tight ends coach in 2023 to offensive line coach in 2024. With nearly 30 years of collegiate coaching experience, Frey’s résumé includes impactful stops at South Florida, West Virginia, Michigan, Indiana, Florida State, Florida, Duke, South Alabama, and Tulsa .
Notably, during his tenure at Indiana (2011–16), he rose to assistant head coach in 2016 and helped engineer one of the most balanced offenses in Big Ten history—Indiana became only the fourth FBS team ever to feature a 3,500‑yard passer, multiple 1,000‑yard rushers, and a 1,000‑yard receiver. His exemplary work earned him a nomination for the Broyles Award .
At Michigan (2008–10; 2017) his units topped conference charts in offensive production, and at Florida State (2018) and Duke (2020–21) he continued sharpening elite offensive linemen and recruiting pipelines .
Building the Big Blue Wall
Frey’s mission at UK is clear: revitalize the Wildcats’ offensive line—often referred to as the “Big Blue Wall”. Kentucky has leaned into NIL and transfer portal talent in recent cycles, meaning Frey will be key in meshing new faces under Wolford’s direction. Stoops underscored the significance of Frey’s arrival: “We’re excited to welcome Coach Frey … he’s well respected across the country” as UK continues rebuilding up front .
Familiar Faces, Longstanding Relationships
Frey’s ties to Stoops trace back nearly three decades, beginning with their time together on South Florida’s inaugural coaching staff in the late 1990s. Stoops, who supplemented his NCAA income by painting houses, and Frey both helped launch USF’s program in 1996. Frey spent 11 pivotal years in Tampa and reinforced a philosophy of bulldozing trenches and player-first development from day one .
“I’ve known Coach Stoops for almost 30 years,” Frey said. “He’s the all‑time winningest coach at UK … Watching him build this program at Kentucky has been incredible, and it’s truly a blessing and an honor to join him again and be part of this journey” .
NFL Lineage and Player Development
With Frey on staff, UK gains a coach who has mentored 40+ NFL players and guided 21 All‑Conference linemen through his career . That pedigree will be crucial in developing the Wildcats’ front five, particularly as they integrate portal additions and rising underclassmen into the offense.

Looking Ahead: What This Means for Kentucky’s 2025 Season
With fall camp just days away, Frey joins the coaching ranks at a pivotal moment. He and Wolford will work hand in hand to whip the Bluegrass State’s offensive line into shape—especially given the team’s reliance on portal starters expected to anchor the line in 2025. Under their tutelage, Kentucky hopes to reclaim its physical edge along the trenches, the bedrock of Stoops’ most successful teams.
As the Wildcats march toward the new season, the addition of Greg Frey provides both seasoned expertise and visionary leadership, signaling Kentucky is serious about reinforcing the core of its offense.
