BASKETBALL: Michigan guard Nimari Burnett announces return for sixth season

The veteran is running it back with hopes of going all the way

Michigan men’s basketball guard Nimari Burnett announced his return on Instagram Monday. The veteran will be entering his sixth and final season of college basketball, having spent one season at Texas Tech (2020-21), two seasons at Alabama (2021-23) and two with the Wolverines (2023-present).

Nimari Burnett returning to Michigan to “win it all”

Over the past two seasons, Burnett has started all 69 games for the Wolverines. He scored in double figures 17 times last year, including a season-high 20 points against Rutgers (Feb. 27) capped off with a buzzer-beating three pointer.

Burnett shot a career-high 47.6 percent from the field last season, and his previous personal best was 39.9. He also made 40 percent of his three pointers, good for another career-high.

With his announcement, Burnett can be considered a lock for the starting lineup next season. He was one of Michigan’s best shooters, but his leadership will be just as valuable going forward. As a whole, the Wolverines don’t have much experience at the guard position, and Burnett will have to help get his young teammates accustomed to Big Ten basketball.

Burnett could start at shooting guard or small forward next season, depending on the type of lineup head coach Dusty May deploys.
