Florida State continues its hot streak in recruiting, landing a major commitment from 4-star safety Eric Winters. The talented defensive back, ranked among the top safeties in the 2025 class, chose the Seminoles over powerhouse programs Auburn and Michigan, solidifying FSU’s status as a destination for elite talent.
Winters, a 6’1”, 195-pound standout from Atlanta, Georgia, has been a coveted prospect for months. Known for his explosive playmaking ability, versatility, and football IQ, he attracted offers from numerous programs. In the end, Florida State’s player development reputation and its resurgence as a national title contender proved to be the deciding factors in his recruitment.
Why Florida State?
Winters cited Florida State’s culture, coaching staff, and vision for his development as key reasons for his decision. “From the moment I stepped on campus, it felt like home,” Winters said during his announcement. “Coach [Mike] Norvell and Coach [Patrick] Surtain have a plan for me, not just as a player but as a person. That’s what set them apart from the rest.”
The Seminoles’ rich history of producing NFL-ready defensive backs also played a role in Winters’ choice. With alumni like Jalen Ramsey, Derwin James, and others thriving at the professional level, FSU has earned a reputation as “DBU,” a label Winters is eager to add to.
The Competition
Auburn and Michigan made strong pushes for Winters. Auburn, with its passionate fan base and promise of early playing time, was considered a frontrunner for much of the recruitment process. Michigan, fresh off consecutive College Football Playoff appearances, pitched its winning culture and academic excellence.
Despite the strong competition, Florida State’s momentum both on and off the field proved too much to overcome. The Seminoles’ current success, including their top-tier recruiting class and on-field dominance, made them an attractive destination.
A Perfect Fit for the Seminoles
Winters’ commitment addresses a key need for the Seminoles as they continue to build a dominant defense. His ability to patrol the secondary, deliver hard hits, and read opposing offenses makes him a perfect fit for Florida State’s aggressive defensive scheme. He’s also shown versatility, excelling as both a deep safety and a slot defender against the pass.
“Eric is a special talent,” said Florida State defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain. “He’s got the instincts, the physicality, and the drive to be an impact player for us from day one.”
What’s Next for FSU?
Winters’ decision is another victory for Florida State, which is assembling one of its strongest recruiting classes in recent memory. The Seminoles are poised to contend for championships, and landing players like Winters ensures the team remains a powerhouse for years to come.
For Winters, his next chapter is about preparation. “I’m ready to put in the work and help Florida State win a national championship,” he said.
With Winters now in the fold, Florida State fans have even more reason to be excited about the future. The Seminoles are back—and they’re just getting started.
