BREAKING: Jeff Hostetler Returns to West Virginia Football in Leadership Role
MORGANTOWN, WV — In a move that blends legacy with leadership, West Virginia University has officially announced that legendary quarterback Jeff Hostetler is returning to the Mountaineers football program in a prominent new role starting in 2025.
Hostetler, who famously led the Mountaineers in the early 1980s before winning a Super Bowl with the New York Giants, will now serve as Special Advisor to the Head Coach and Program Ambassador. The announcement has electrified WVU fans across the country, many of whom view Hostetler as one of the most beloved and impactful players in school history.
> “The West Virginia football program has always held a special place in my heart,” Hostetler said. “This university gave me a second chance, and I’ve never forgotten that. I’m excited to return and help guide the next generation of Mountaineers—both on and off the field.”
The leadership role is designed to utilize Hostetler’s wealth of experience in professional football, as well as his long-standing ties to WVU and the Morgantown community. He’ll act as a mentor to players, a sounding board for coaching staff, and a public face of the program for alumni and fans.
Athletic Director Wren Baker praised the move, calling Hostetler “a Mountaineer through and through” and noting that his return marks “a new era of culture, commitment, and championship mindset” in the football program.
Hostetler’s rejoining the program comes at a time when WVU is pushing to return to national prominence in the Big 12 Conference. His presence is expected to strengthen recruiting, alumni engagement, and the program’s overall leadership structure.
