Ala.— As Jalen Milroe took the stage during the 2025 Reese’s Senior Bowl week, a consistent theme resonated throughout his press conference—his journey of knowledge and growth.
Milroe emphasized that expanding his knowledge has been pivotal in shaping his game over his four years at Alabama. He has continually absorbed insights from coaches and mentors, preparing himself for the next level in his football career.
One significant influence on Milroe’s development has been Tommy Rees, now the offensive coordinator for the Browns. Rees and Milroe both began their respective roles at Alabama in 2023, with Rees stepping in as the offensive coordinator. Reflecting on their time together, Milroe credited Rees with broadening his understanding of football.
“The depth of knowledge I gained from him is immense—firstly, from his experience playing the position, and secondly, from his coaching. I’ve developed a great deal of respect for him,” Milroe remarked. “We collaborated closely throughout the season, and it was incredibly rewarding to see our growth from the start to the end. The hard work we put in behind the scenes truly paid off when we worked together as a team.”
In 2023, Milroe completed 187 out of 284 pass attempts, amassing 2,834 yards and 23 touchdowns while only throwing six interceptions over 13 games. Additionally, he recorded 161 carries, resulting in 531 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns.
Rees’ tenure at Alabama lasted just one season before he moved on to become the tight ends coach/pass game specialist for the Browns in 2024, and later their offensive coordinator in January 2025. Despite their short time together, Milroe cherished the invaluable lessons learned under Rees’ guidance.
“I hold Coach Rees in high regard, both as a coach and as a person,” Milroe shared. “Building a relationship with him during my college years was an incredible experience, albeit brief. As a first-year starter, the knowledge I gained each week was invaluable, and I deeply appreciate the effort and dedication that went into that season.”
Rees reciprocated Milroe’s sentiments during his introduction as the Browns’ offensive coordinator. He spoke highly of their bond forged during the 2023 season.
“I have immense love and respect for Jalen,” Rees stated on January 23. “Spending an entire season together creates a special relationship between a play caller and quarterback. I admire Jalen for who he is and wish him nothing but the best.”
Reflecting on his time at Alabama, Milroe acknowledged that the mental repetitions over four seasons, coupled with physical reps in practice and games, significantly contributed to his growth. Observing Bryce Young’s success, including leading Alabama to an SEC championship and winning the Heisman Trophy, served as both encouragement and a catalyst for Milroe’s mental development.
