Jakob Robinson Signs Free Agent Contract with San Francisco 49ers.

Jakob Robinson, a cornerback from Brigham Young University (BYU), has officially signed with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent following the 2025 NFL Draft. Robinson’s signing marks a significant opportunity for both the player and the team, as the 49ers look to bolster their secondary while giving Robinson a platform to prove his worth at the professional level. Despite going undrafted, Robinson’s college career, impressive physical attributes, and skills on the field position him as a valuable asset for the 49ers.

A Strong College Career at BYU

Robinson’s collegiate journey began at Utah State before transferring to BYU, where he became a standout cornerback for the Cougars. During his time at BYU, Robinson showed remarkable consistency, making significant contributions to the team’s defense. Over the course of his college career, Robinson racked up 182 total tackles, 21 pass deflections, and 11 interceptions. His ability to read the game and make plays on the ball helped elevate him as one of the premier defensive backs in the Big 12.

Known for his quickness and agility, Robinson’s performance did not go unnoticed. He was named a Second-Team All-Big 12 selection in 2024 and earned a spot as a semifinalist for the prestigious Jim Thorpe Award, given annually to the nation’s best defensive back. This recognition placed him in elite company, demonstrating his ability to compete at a high level. Robinson’s leadership skills were also highlighted, as he served as a team captain during his senior year, further showcasing his maturity and on-field intelligence.

Physical Attributes and Athleticism

At 5 feet 10 inches and 181 pounds, Robinson is not the tallest cornerback in the draft class, but his athleticism more than compensates for his size. His 40-yard dash time of 4.39 seconds and a 38.5-inch vertical jump display his elite speed and jumping ability. These attributes, combined with his quick reflexes and high football IQ, make him a versatile and dangerous presence in the secondary. Robinson’s athletic profile aligns well with the NFL’s emphasis on speed and agility, especially at the cornerback position where defenders are often asked to mirror fast wide receivers.

Transitioning to the NFL

While Robinson’s strong college career made him a standout prospect, his absence from the 2025 NFL Draft left many questioning why a player of his caliber wasn’t selected. However, this setback hasn’t deterred Robinson. The 49ers recognized his potential and were quick to sign him as an undrafted free agent. This move allows Robinson a fresh opportunity to prove himself in the NFL. The 49ers, known for developing players and giving undrafted free agents a chance to shine, provide an ideal environment for Robinson to flourish.

Joining a competitive team with a solid defensive unit, Robinson will be pushed to perform at his best. With an already strong secondary featuring players like Charvarius Ward and Talanoa Hufanga, Robinson will need to stand out during training camps and preseason games to earn a roster spot. His versatility—being able to play both outside corner and the nickel—gives him a unique advantage in competing for playing time.

Proving Himself in the NFL

Robinson faces significant competition to secure a role on the 49ers’ roster. The team has a deep and talented secondary, and rookies and undrafted free agents often need to impress in a variety of ways to make the final cut. For Robinson, showing his ability to cover receivers in one-on-one situations, providing run support, and contributing to special teams will be key factors in earning playing time.

While making the roster may be challenging, Robinson’s determination, athletic ability, and football IQ provide him with the tools to succeed. His mindset of proving himself could inspire him to make the most of this opportunity, ultimately carving out a meaningful role with the 49ers.
