Jack Kelly to leave BYU, following a signed contract.

In a twist that’s left NFL scouts stunned and Cougar fans divided, BYU standout linebacker Jack Kelly has announced he won’t be declaring for the 2025 NFL Draft — instead, he’s staying in Provo for another season.

Kelly, who transferred from Weber State and quickly became a defensive force at BYU, led the team with five sacks and 14 quarterback hurries last season. He wasn’t just good — he was dominant, earning Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year and First Team All-Big 12 honors. Even ESPN’s Mel Kiper had him ranked as the #5 outside linebacker prospect for the upcoming draft.

So why turn down the NFL spotlight?

Some say it’s loyalty. Others say it’s a missed opportunity. A growing number of fans and analysts alike are questioning the wisdom of staying, especially when his draft stock was peaking. NFL interest was real — and now, with another season of risk (injury, performance dip, team underperformance), Kelly might be gambling with millions on the table.

But here’s the other side: BYU’s defense is rebuilding, and Kelly’s return could be the lynchpin for a Big 12 title run. Maybe, just maybe, he’s playing the long game — turning down short-term fame for long-term legacy.

One thing’s for sure: Jack Kelly’s decision has lit a fire under Cougar Nation. Whether it’s loyalty or lunacy, 2025 just got a lot more interesting.
