Kevin Young, who was previously the associate head coach for the NBA’s Phoenix Suns, was hired as the new head coach of BYU men’s basketball in April 2024. He replaced Mark Pope, who left to become the head coach at the University of Kentucky.
In his first season, Young made a big impact by leading the Cougars to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. His NBA experience has helped BYU attract top-level talent, including five-star recruits like Egor Demin and AJ Dybantsa, along with Baylor transfer Robert Wright III.
Dybantsa’s commitment made headlines due to a groundbreaking NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deal estimated to be between $5 million and $7 million. Young is known for his fast-paced style of play and is aiming to make BYU a top destination for players hoping to make it to the NBA.
His leadership has brought a fresh energy to the program, and expectations are high for what’s next.
