Phoenix Mercury Makes History with PlayStation Partnership and 2026 Video Game Cover Debut
In a groundbreaking leap forward for women’s sports, the Phoenix Mercury have announced a historic partnership with PlayStation, becoming the first WNBA team ever to be featured on the cover of a major basketball video game. This trailblazing collaboration will see the Mercury take center stage on the cover of the highly anticipated 2026 Basketball video game, set to be released in early fall next year.
The deal marks a monumental shift in how women’s athletics are represented in the gaming world, long dominated by male athletes and NBA franchises. As part of the partnership, PlayStation will also serve as the Mercury’s official gaming and technology sponsor, with exclusive branding across digital platforms, in-arena experiences, and co-branded content initiatives.
“This isn’t just a win for the Mercury, it’s a win for the WNBA, for women’s sports, and for representation everywhere,” said Mercury star Diana Taurasi in a press release. “Being on the cover of a global video game signals that women’s basketball is not only here — it’s a cultural force.”
The 2026 video game will also include enhanced WNBA gameplay modes, new storylines, and behind-the-scenes access inspired by the Mercury’s historic run and legacy. This includes the team’s championship years and legendary players like Taurasi, Brittney Griner, and Skylar Diggins-Smith.
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert hailed the move as “a pivotal step toward parity and progress,” adding that this collaboration “redefines the boundaries of what’s possible for our athletes.”
With a new spotlight and cultural momentum, the Phoenix Mercury continue to set the gold standard in the WNBA — now not just on the court, but on screens around
