In reality, United played carefully and primarily in their own half, with the backline leading one of their greatest performances of the season by preventing every Liverpool assault.

Surprisingly, few teams, especially ones in poor form, would travel to Merseyside intending to sit back and allow their opponents stroll the ball into the net, but that appears to be what Klopp was anticipating.

Given his chance on Wednesday, Jones impressed in the absence of Mac Allister and Gravenberch, and he will be hoping for a sustained run in the side during the holiday season.

“I am really proud of you. You work really hard, but no one sees it since it is done behind closed doors. Continue on.” Jones said, “I respect you, every time, brother.”
