How DeSean Bishop bet on himself from Tennessee football walk-on to scholarship

DeSean Bishop: From Walk-On to Scholarship Star at Tennessee

DeSean Bishop’s journey from a walk-on to earning a scholarship with the University of Tennessee Volunteers is a testament to his resilience, self-belief, and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Early Life and High School Success

Hailing from Knoxville, Tennessee, Bishop attended Karns High School, where he established himself as one of the state’s premier running backs. Over his high school career, he amassed 8,347 rushing yards and 102 touchdowns, ranking second and third, respectively, in Tennessee high school football history. His senior year was particularly remarkable; he rushed for 2,413 yards and 30 touchdowns, earning him the Tennessee Titans 5A Mr. Football award for the second consecutive year.

Choosing Tennessee

Despite his impressive high school statistics, Bishop’s recruitment was less than conventional. He initially committed to Coastal Carolina but later reopened his recruitment. On National Signing Day in December 2022, he chose to walk on at the University of Tennessee, turning down offers from other Division I programs. “I believe in myself wholeheartedly. If I didn’t think I could play here, I wouldn’t have come,” Bishop remarked, reflecting his confidence and determination.

Rising Through the Ranks

Bishop’s transition to college football wasn’t without challenges. After redshirting his freshman year due to injury, he faced the competitive environment of Tennessee’s running back room. However, his work ethic and belief in his abilities set him apart. “I approach it every day, I’m by far one of the hardest workers on the program right now,” he stated, emphasizing his dedication.

His perseverance paid off during the 2024 season. In the regular-season finale against Vanderbilt, Bishop showcased his potential with 13 carries for 61 yards. Earlier in the season, he averaged 7.2 yards per carry in a win against #7 Alabama and posted a career-high 120 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries in a victory over Kent State.

Earning the Scholarship

Bishop’s consistent performances did not go unnoticed. His contributions on the field, combined with his academic achievements, led to his well-deserved scholarship offer from Coach Josh Heupel. This milestone was a culmination of years of hard work, self-belief, and a relentless drive to prove himself.

Looking Ahead

Now a scholarship athlete, Bishop continues to defy expectations. His story serves as an inspiration to many, illustrating that with determination and self-belief, it’s possible to overcome obstacles and achieve one’s dreams. As he progresses in his college career, fans and teammates alike anticipate even greater contributions from this remarkable young man.
