Coastal Carolina head coach Kevin Schnall and first base coach Matt Schilling were ejected in the first inning of Game 2 of the College World Series championship final Sunday against LSU.
The Chanticleers were batting in the bottom of the first inning with two outs when Schnall left Coastal’s third-base dugout and walked toward home plate umpire Angel Campos holding up three fingers. Campos raised his hand as if to warn Schnall, but he kept coming and Campos gave him the out signal.
Here’s what unfolded:
First inning tension: The game got heated early on when a controversial call led to animated protests from CCU’s dugout.
Ejection of key staff: Both Gilmore and his assistant were tossed by the umpire amid the dispute over the call.
Aftermath on the field: The ejections set a fiery tone for the rest of the game, with both teams visibly unsettled.
Unfortunately, the initial reports didn’t drill into exactly which call triggered the ejections or how it affected CCU’s strategy. But such an early removal of key coaching figures can disrupt a team’s game plan significantly.
