UConn’s Paige Bueckers Wakes Up Every Morning to Cook for Teammate Observing Ramadan

In a heartwarming display of friendship and teamwork, UConn’s Paige Bueckers has gone above and beyond to support her teammate, who is observing Ramadan during the college basketball season. As Ramadan, a significant month of fasting and spiritual reflection for Muslims, falls during the NCAA Tournament, Bueckers has made a remarkable gesture by waking up early every morning to prepare meals for her teammate, ensuring she can break her fast and maintain energy for the team’s rigorous schedule.

Ramadan is a time of fasting from dawn until sunset, a practice that requires individuals to abstain from food and drink during daylight hours. For athletes, especially those in high-demand programs like UConn’s women’s basketball team, managing fasting while maintaining peak performance can be a challenge. However, Bueckers, a selfless and caring teammate, has taken it upon herself to help ease that challenge for her fellow player, making sure she is fueled and supported during this sacred time.

Each morning before practice, Bueckers has been waking up early to prepare a nutritious meal for her teammate to eat before the fast begins at sunrise. This thoughtful act of kindness not only helps ensure her teammate has the energy to power through practice and games, but it also highlights the bond and camaraderie that exists within the UConn women’s basketball team. Bueckers, a former national player of the year and one of the top stars in women’s college basketball, has always been known for her leadership on the court, but this gesture off the court speaks to her character and compassion.

“I just want to make sure she has the best chance to perform at her best while respecting her faith,” Bueckers shared. “It’s important for us as teammates to support each other in all aspects of life, not just basketball. Ramadan is a special time for her, and I’m happy to help however I can.”

This type of leadership is not new for Bueckers, who has shown time and again that her role as a leader extends beyond basketball. Whether it’s leading the team to victory on the court or supporting her teammates through personal and cultural milestones, Bueckers consistently exemplifies the true meaning of team unity. Her actions have not only inspired her teammate but also the entire UConn community, demonstrating the importance of empathy, respect, and understanding for one another’s beliefs and practices.

For her teammate, the act of kindness is deeply meaningful. “It means a lot to me that Paige is taking the time to make sure I’m okay during Ramadan,” said the player, who prefers to remain anonymous. “It’s not just about the food; it’s about her support and understanding. I couldn’t ask for a better teammate.”

As UConn continues its journey through the NCAA Tournament, Bueckers’ selfless actions serve as a reminder of the power of teamwork, not only in basketball but also in life. Her commitment to supporting her teammate, both on and off the court, further solidifies her role as a leader who understands the importance of compassion and mutual respect in building a successful, tight-knit team. Whether they’re facing opponents in the tournament or navigating personal challenges, the UConn Huskies continue to show that together, they are stronger.
