Paul Mainieri has made good on a promise he gave when he was hired as the South Carolina baseball coach
Mainieri vowed that day in June that he did not come to Columbia for South Carolina to be mediocre, and he hasn’t been.
He has been far worse.
“I don’t see why we can’t compete for everything right out of the gate,” Mainieri said. “I didn’t come here to lose. I didn’t come here to be mediocre. In my opinion, Carolina baseball represents excellence . . . I think we need to win now
He got all of that right. South Carolina was in position to win now with a new coach. Of course, he didn’t come to the proud program to lose — such comments are the norm at an introductory news conference. USC is a great program and it did need to win now
