Ryan Grubb has been on the verge of becoming Alabama’s offensive coordinator several times, having interviewed with Nick Saban and even accepting the position under Kalen DeBoer last season before joining the Seattle Seahawks.
After being dismissed by the Seahawks, speculation arose about Grubb’s potential return to college football. During the Senior Bowl practice on Tuesday, DeBoer was asked if he had considered bringing Grubb to his staff in Tuscaloosa. DeBoer responded, “We go way back. Great friend of mine. Think the world of him as a football coach and person. He’s working through his process after what last season brought, so we’ll see what he does. I’m here for him whenever he needs me.”
With Grubb’s departure, DeBoer promoted tight ends coach Nick Sheridan to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Despite some bright spots in 2024, the Crimson Tide’s offense struggled with consistency and key moments.
Grubb and DeBoer had previously led Washington to a national championship game appearance in 2023, with a potent offense led by quarterback Michael Penix Jr., now with the Atlanta Falcons.
As Alabama heads into a critical offseason, DeBoer’s second season will include a quarterback competition among Ty Simpson, Austin Mack, and true freshman Keelon Russell, following Jalen Milroe’s departure for the NFL Draft. The Crimson Tide’s A-Day spring game is set for April 12, and they will kick off the 2025 season against Florida State in Tallahassee on August 30.
