Great Scott! Duke Gets Another Portal Pickup.
Duke picked up an unexpected portal addition Sunday when Jack Scott of Princeton committed to the Blue Devils.
He didn’t have a monster career as a Tiger: last season he averaged 1.6 ppg, 0.8 assists and 1.6 rebounds.
He averaged about 10 minutes a game.
Clearly, he isn’t being added to Duke’s roster because he’s an immense offensive talent. So why Scott?
We can’t really say because none of us are privy to those conversations, but we can make some guesses.
First, he’s shown some balls. When Princeton played Rutgers this season, he went jaw to jaw with Ace Bailey. That might have made an impression.
He’s also a coach’s son and that fits a Duke profile that Jon Scheyer values much as Mike Krzyzewksi did. There’s an advantage to getting kids with a basketball background. In fact, Pat Ngongba, the Boozer twins and Nikolas Khamenia all fit that profile too.
Finally, we know now that Scheyer knows how to build a roster. He may have a particular role in mind for Scott that we don’t yet understand. It could simply be having an older player around to help the younger guys. Who knows?
Whatever it is, we’ve learned to trust his judgement.
Here’s Duke’s roster as of now, assuming Cedric Coward doesn’t stay in the NBA Draft:
Caleb Foster
Isaiah Evans
Pat Ngongba
Maliq Brown
Darren Harris
Cam Sheffield
Cam Boozer
Cayden Boozer
Nikolas Khamenia
Jack Scott
Cedric Coward
Ifeanyi Ufochukwu
