Georgia eyeing new RB that will challenge Nate Frazier

Georgia may have found their backup running back.

Georgia football entered the spring transfer portal season with an obvious need at a few positions. EDGE and the defensive line were two positions that stood out the most, but running back was one position that some people thought needed another player as well.

This became especially true after running back Branson Robinson was the first Bulldog to enter his name into the transfer portal this spring.

Kirby Smart turned his initial attention to those EDGE players and defensive linemen when the portal first opened because that was still a greater need than running back, but it now appears that he has found a target at running back that he is very interested in.

Illinois transfer RB Josh McCray

According to Graham Coffey with Dawgs Central, the Bulldogs are targeting running back Josh McCray, who is a transfer from Illinois.

Illinois is not known for football by any means, but they had a great year last season where they finished with 10 wins for the first time since 2001. This included a 21-17 win in their bowl game against a hot South Carolina team.

One of the reasons for their historic season was because of the play of McCray, who tallied 609 yards on 117 carries while also finding the end zone 10 times. McCray is also a decent threat in the passing game out of the backfield as well as he recorded 13 receptions for a solid 106 yards as well.

McCray is someone that could be a starter at most schools across the country, and that could even be the case at Georgia as well. It might be unlikely for him to pass Nate Frazier on the depth chart, but he would be a solid backup to Frazier who wouldn’t be much of a drop-off from him at all.

So since UGA doesn’t have a proven backup to Frazier yet, adding McCray would be a really good idea
