Four-Star Point Guard Sydney Benally
In a major recruiting win for BYU Women’s Basketball, four-star point guard Sydney Benally has officially committed to join the Cougars for the 2025–26 season. Originally committed to Princeton, Benally reversed course and signed with BYU, giving the program a significant boost in talent and national recognition.
Benally, a dynamic and intelligent floor general, brings a versatile offensive game and strong leadership qualities to a program in transition under new head coach Lee Cummard. Known for her elite court vision, scoring ability, and defensive tenacity, Benally’s decision to flip her commitment marks one of the biggest recruiting coups for BYU in recent years.
Standing at 5-foot-8, she led Arizona’s Seton Catholic Prep to multiple state titles and was regarded as one of the top point guard prospects in the western United States. Her national ranking as a four-star recruit puts her among the elite incoming freshmen in the country, and she is expected to make an immediate impact in BYU’s backcourt.
Benally’s decision to choose BYU over Ivy League powerhouse Princeton speaks volumes about the direction of the Cougars’ program. With a renewed focus on player development and competitive success in the Big 12 Conference, BYU is positioning itself as a legitimate contender in women’s college basketball.
Coach Lee Cummard praised the commitment, saying, “Sydney is a special player with high basketball IQ and a relentless work ethic. She’s going to be a foundational piece for our future.”
As BYU continues to retool its roster with a mix of veteran transfers and high-impact freshmen, Benally’s commitment is a signal to fans and rivals alike that BYU is serious about competing at the highest level. The future in Provo just got a lot brighter.
