Four Coaches Ohio State Could Target for Its Next Defensive Coordinator

Ohio State is in the market for a new defensive coordinator following Jim Knowles  unexpected departure to Penn State. Knowles, who played a crucial role in shaping the Buckeyes elite defense, is now set to earn over $3 million per year making him the highest-paid coordinator in college football history. His exit, which reportedly included being asked to sit out Ohio State championship parade while weighing his options, has left many Buckeye fans uneasy about the team defensive future.

With the search now underway, head coach Ryan Day and his staff must move quickly to find a replacement capable of maintaining Ohio State defensive dominance. Several high-profile coaches could be in the mixeach bringing experience, strong leadership, and a track record of success. Here are four potential candidates Ohio State could pursue.

1. Jim Leonhard Denver Broncos Defensive Pass Game Coordinator

Jim Leonhard is widely regarded as one of the brightest defensive minds in football. As Wisconsin defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2022, he consistently led one of the nation top defensive units, with his teams frequently ranking in the top 10 in total defense. Known for his adaptability and ability to develop talent, Leonhard could bring a disciplined, hard-nosed approach to Columbus.

Currently serving as the defensive pass game coordinator for the Denver Broncos, the challenge for Ohio State would be convincing him to return to the college level. However, his past success in the Big Ten makes him an attractive option if he open to making the jump back.

2. Randy Bates Pittsburgh Defensive Coordinator

A name that could fly under the radar but makes a lot of sense is Randy Bates. The current Pittsburgh defensive coordinator has built a reputation for developing aggressive, hard-nosed defenses since taking over the role in 2018. Under his leadership, Pitt has finished in the top 25 in total defense multiple times, proving his ability to craft elite units.

Bates also has strong ties to the Buckeye program, as he is an Ohio State graduate. Additionally, his extensive experience in the Big Ten spending 12 years as Northwestern linebackers coach gives him familiarity with the conference. His combination of experience, player development skills, and Ohio State connections could make him a strong candidate for the job.

3. Jeff Hafley Green Bay Packers Defensive Coordinator

Jeff Hafley is a name that will immediately resonate with Ohio State fans. As the Buckeyes  co-defensive coordinator in 2019, he led one of the most dominant defensive units in program history, helping Ohio State finish first nationally in total defense. His aggressive approach, emphasis on fundamentals, and ability to maximize player potential made him a standout during his time in Columbus.

After leaving to become Boston Collegehead coach, Hafley recently transitioned back to the NFL as the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers. While luring him away from an NFL coordinator position might be challenging, his familiarity with Ryan Day and the Buckeye program could make Ohio State a tempting destination especially with the right financial offer.

4. Luke Fickell Wisconsin Head Coach

If Ohio State is looking for a dream hire, few names would excite Buckeye Nation more than Luke Fickell. A former Ohio State player and longtime assistant, Fickell served as the team defensive coordinator from 2005 to 2016 and even took over as interim head coach in 2011. His deep understanding of the program and proven defensive acumen make him a natural fit.

Currently, Fickell is the head coach at Wisconsin, where he facing increased pressure following a disappointing 2024 season. While it rare for a sitting head coach to return to a coordinator role, Ohio State has never shied away from bold moves. If the opportunity presents itself, a reunion between Fickell and the Buckeyes could be a game-changing addition for the program.

Final Thoughts

Replacing Jim Knowles is no small task, but Ohio State has plenty of strong options to consider. Whether they look to the NFL for a proven defensive mind like Jim Leonhard or Jeff Hafley, target a rising star like Randy Bates, or aim for a blockbuster hire with Luke Fickell, the Buckeyes have the resources to make a major move.

With the 2025 season approaching, the decision will be crucial in shaping Ohio State championship aspirations. Fans will be watching closely as Ryan Day and his staff navigate one of the most important hires of the offseason.
