Former Tennessee quarterback hired as an offensive coach for Virginia.

Former Tennessee quarterback Patrick Ashford has landed a new role with the Virginia Cavaliers, serving as an offensive analyst for the 2025 college football season.

Ashford played for Tennessee from 2013 to 2014. He was a backup quarterback during his two years on Rocky Top and joined the Vols after two seasons playing for Carson Newman.

His primary role was as the PAT and field goal holder during his time at Tennessee. He also appeared in Tennessee’s TaxSlayer Bowl and Outback Bowl wins at the conclusion of the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Ashford joins Virginia after four seasons at VMI, three of which were as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Under Ashford’s leadership, VMI had one of its most successful offensive runs in school history, winning the Southern Conference and competing in the FCS Playoffs.

Ashford also worked as a quarterback coach at UT-Martin and as an offensive assistant at Austin Peay before joining Vanderbilt for three seasons as a graduate assistant coach of tight ends and wide receivers. During his time in Nashville, he helped the Commodores to one of their best offensive seasons in school history, averaging 28.5 points per game and 411.2 yards per game.

Virginia is looking to capture some of the magic Ashford has been able to create as an offensive assistant and playcaller across the FBS and FCS levels.

Tony Elliott is entering his fourth season as the Cavaliers’ head coach and will look to break through in 2025 and make a bowl game for the first time during his time in Charlottesville.
