Jim Tressel, the legendary former Ohio State head football coach who led the Buckeyes to a national championship in 2002, is stepping into a new leadership role—this time, in politics. On Monday morning, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced that Tressel would serve as the state’s new lieutenant governor.
Tressel replaces Jon Husted, who transitioned to the U.S. Senate following J.D. Vance’s move to the vice presidency earlier this year.
From the Gridiron to Government
Following his resignation as Ohio State’s head coach in 2011, Tressel pivoted to academic leadership, becoming president of Youngstown State University in 2014. After retiring from that position in 2023, he appeared to be settling into retirement—until this unexpected call to public service.
During a press conference, Governor DeWine explained why he chose Tressel for the role.
“I needed someone who understands Ohio, someone with strong judgment and leadership experience,” DeWine said. “Jim Tressel has spent decades making tough decisions, bringing people together, and embodying Ohio values. He’s exactly the kind of leader we need.”
A Decision Guided by Family
Tressel admitted that he hadn’t initially considered a political role, but a conversation with his wife, Ellen, changed his perspective.
“She told me, ‘It sounds like God has more work for you to do. We owe so much to Ohio, and if the governor believes you can help, we should consider it,’” Tressel shared. “And I always listen to Ellen.”
Future in Politics?
When asked whether he would run for governor in 2026, Tressel remained noncommittal, leaving the door open for speculation. For now, his focus is on serving Ohio in his new role, adding another chapter to his already remarkable legacy in the state.
