Former BYU Guard Kaylee Smiler Transfers to Hawaii, Returns to Island Roots for Final Season
Veteran guard Kaylee Smiler has announced her transfer from BYU to the University of Hawaii, returning to her Pacific roots for her final season of college basketball. The New Zealand native, who spent five seasons with the Cougars, brings leadership, experience, and a high basketball IQ to the Rainbow Wahine program.
Smiler was a steady presence during her time at BYU, known for her calm demeanor, sharp perimeter shooting, and on-court leadership. During the 2023–24 season, she averaged 5.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game, often serving as a glue player who could facilitate the offense and defend multiple positions. She started 25 games and became a trusted voice in BYU’s locker room.
Her decision to transfer to Hawaii was influenced by a desire to be closer to her home region and contribute to a growing program in the Big West Conference. “This move is about finishing strong and giving back to the community that shaped me,” Smiler said in a statement. “I’m excited to be part of something special at Hawaii and help elevate the program however I can.”
Hawaii head coach Laura Beeman welcomed Smiler’s addition, calling her “a player with invaluable experience, composure, and a team-first mentality.” Smiler’s arrival comes at a crucial time for the Rainbow Wahine, who are aiming to return to the NCAA Tournament and need veteran leadership in their backcourt.
For BYU, Smiler’s departure marks the end of an era, as she was one of the longest-tenured players on the roster. Her leadership will be missed, but the Cougars continue to retool through the transfer portal and recruiting.
Smiler’s journey reflects the evolving landscape of women’s college basketball, where personal growth, proximity to family, and program fit are playing bigger roles in transfer decisions.
