Former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback A.J. McCarron, widely considered one of the program’s all-time greats, is returning to Tuscaloosa in a new role.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — In a move that has thrilled fans across the Crimson Tide community, former Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron is officially returning to Tuscaloosa — this time off the field.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks in Alabama history, McCarron will be stepping into a new role with the program, helping shape the next generation of Tide athletes. His exact title and responsibilities are expected to be announced in the coming days, but sources close to the program say McCarron’s new position will blend player development, mentoring, and public relations.

McCarron’s legacy at Alabama is nothing short of iconic. Under legendary head coach Nick Saban, he led the Crimson Tide to back-to-back national championships in 2011 and 2012, compiling a 36-4 record as a starter — the best winning percentage by a quarterback in program history at the time.

“I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity to come back home,” McCarron said in a statement. “Alabama is in my blood. It shaped me into the man I am today, and now I’m excited to help the next wave of players wear that jersey with pride.”

Since leaving Alabama, McCarron carved out a professional career that included time in the NFL and, most recently, a standout season in the XFL. His leadership, poise, and deep connection to the Crimson Tide culture make him an ideal figure to guide young athletes navigating the pressures of college football.

The move also signals a commitment by Alabama to continue blending its storied tradition with fresh energy and insight from past stars who understand what it takes to win at the highest level.

More details about McCarron’s role and upcoming involvement with the team are expected to be announced during a press conference later this week.
