Former 4-star Michigan point guard is on the move yet again in the transfer portal
Former Michigan point guard Dug McDaniel is back in the transfer portal after spending one season at Kansas State.
Former Michigan point guard Dug McDaniel has entered the transfer portal yet again after spending one season with the Kansas State Wildcats. McDaniel spent two seasons at Michigan before choosing to transfer after Fusty May was hired.
McDaniel was a former 40-star recruit out of high school and looks like he would really pan out for the Wolverines as a small point guard with great vision of the court and ability to finish at the basket. However, after some struggles with school, that left him out of a few games during the 2023-2024 season, McDaniel wanted to go elsewhere.
Now, as a 4-star transfer as well, McDaniel will likely have his pick of places to go, however, his numbers did drop while at Kansas State. In his sophomore year, his final season with the Wolverines, McDaniel averaged 16.3 points per game, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.7 assists. However, this past season, he averaged just 11.4 points per game, 2.8 rebounds, and 4.9 assists.
While it seems like McDaniel took a step back this past season, some of that is due to the Wildcats having a rough season in the Big 12. McDaniel stepped up in Big 12 play, but Kansas State struggled to find wins until it was too late.
McDaniel was key in Kansas State’s wins over Iowa State, Kansas, and Arizona, three ranked opponents at the time. He scored 20 against the Cyclones, 15 against the Jayhawks, and 24 against the other Wildcats. The guards ability to take lead in a game was something that made him so good at Michigan.
There doesn’t seem to be any interest in McDaniel coming back to Michigan, but it would be interesting to see how Michigan lost its point guard, Tre Donaldson, to the transfer portal. However, some are predicting McDaniel may end up at Memphis, joining former NBA star Penny Hardaway.
