For the first time in his career, redshirt sophomore quarterback Austin Simmons is representing the Ole Miss Rebels down in Thibodaux, La. for the 29th annual Manning Passing Academy. Simmons is next in line to take the torch of a long list of talented starting Rebel quarterbacks.
Among that group, and arguably at the top, is Eli Manning.
Manning and previous starting quarterback Jaxson Dart developed a relationship over the years in Oxford, that’s still there now in New York. Now, it’s Simmons’ turn to learn as much as he can from Ole Miss’ future Hall of Fame product. It feels great, just being around them,” Simmons said of the Manning’s Friday, via the Clarion Ledger. “Talking to them for a good bit last night at our social event, a dinner. The relationship is going to be stronger over time but it feels good being around them.”
Simmons has noted throughout the offseason that he’s tried to incorporate aspects of Dart’s preparation and leadership style that he saw first hand over the years, with his own spin. His eagerness to learn and soak up information has caught the attention of Ole Miss’ previous all-time leading passer.
“He’s here, he wants to learn,” Manning said. “Absorb anything he can from Peyton (Manning) and I and some other quarterbacks. I’ve been impressed so far with what he’s doing.”I’ve been keeping up with his time at Ole Miss these past couple years. Reading about him in the spring. He looked great yesterday. Seems like a great kid. A lot of energy. Always smiling (and) takes the coaching.”
For now Simmons is learning whatever he can from the Ole Miss legend, but knows time is of the essence. “Right now, I’m still building that relationship with them,” Simmons explained. “It was my first time really talking to them last night — like, a meaningful conversation, last night. That relationship is going to come over time. The wisdom stuff takes more of a time while I’m around them more often, while I’m here. It’ll come.”
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound signal-caller is entering his third season with the Rebels. Simmons was able to get valuable game reps in 2024, with his most important coming against No. 2 Georgia in a critical situation. Simmons completed 19-of-32 passes for 282 passing yards and two touchdowns last fall.
