James Worthy Returns to UNC as Senior Coach: “I’m Here to Bring Another Banner to Chapel Hill”
CHAPEL HILL, NC — July 18, 2025
In what can only be described as a seismic moment for North Carolina basketball, James Worthy — Tar Heel legend, Hall of Famer, and NBA icon — is officially coming home. But this time, not as a player, not as a mentor from the stands, but as the Senior Coaching Advisor for the UNC men’s basketball program.
The announcement sent shockwaves through the college basketball world Tuesday morning, as UNC held a surprise press conference inside the Dean E. Smith Center, where banners of Worthy’s legacy already hang high above.
> “I’ve had a lot of roles in my career,” Worthy said, his voice steady, eyes shining, “But this one feels the most personal. I’m not just returning to coach. I’m returning to finish what I started here — to bring another championship to Carolina.”
Worthy, who led UNC to a national title in 1982 alongside freshman Michael Jordan and under the legendary Dean Smith, will now join head coach Hubert Davis’ staff as a senior coaching voice focused on player development, frontcourt mentoring, and championship culture.
A Full-Circle Homecoming
After decades as a respected NBA broadcaster and player development consultant with the Lakers, Worthy’s decision to return to college — and specifically UNC — is more than symbolic. It marks a full-circle journey.
> “My heart’s never left Chapel Hill,” he said. “I owe this place everything. It’s where I became a man, a teammate, a champion. Now I want to help the next generation write their own story.”
Sources say Worthy was instrumental behind the scenes during the recruitment of UNC’s incoming 2025 class — including seven-foot-nine phenom E.J. N’dour, and five-star forward Khalil Benson. Both reportedly cited Worthy’s influence as a major reason for committing.
> “When a guy like James Worthy tells you he’s going to help shape your game, you listen,” Benson said. “He’s done it at every level. Who better to learn from?”
Championship or Bust Mentality
Coach Hubert Davis, who has ushered in a new era of UNC basketball with a blend of tradition and modern style, said Worthy’s presence is “the final piece.”
> “We’ve got the talent, we’ve got the hunger,” Davis said. “Now we have the championship DNA right here in the building. When Big Game James walks into practice, everyone sits up straighter. His voice carries weight.”
With the return of veteran stars, a loaded recruiting class, and now the addition of Worthy to the bench, expectations for UNC’s 2025–26 campaign are sky-high. The message from the Tar Heels is clear:
> The time is now.
Worthy ended the press conference with a simple but powerful statement, one that echoed throughout the rafters of the Smith Center:
> “This isn’t about legacy. This is about unfinished business.”
And with that, the Tar Heels — electrified, focused, and reloaded — look ready to chase banner No. 7.
