Duke’s Sean Stewart Poised for Breakout Sophomore Season
After a freshman year spent largely learning the ropes behind Duke’s veteran frontcourt, forward Sean Stewart is now poised for a breakout sophomore campaign. With the departure of several key players to the NBA, including Kyle Filipowski and Mark Mitchell, Stewart is expected to take on a much larger role in the 2024–25 season—one that could showcase his full potential on both ends of the floor.
Stewart, a former five-star recruit out of Florida, averaged modest numbers as a freshman (3.8 points and 3.2 rebounds per game) but showed flashes of brilliance, particularly with his rebounding, hustle plays, and defensive energy. Standing 6’9″ with a strong frame and elite athleticism, he has all the physical tools to become a dominant presence in the paint for the Blue Devils.
This offseason, Stewart has reportedly been one of the hardest workers on the team, spending time refining his footwork, expanding his mid-range jumper, and building chemistry with Duke’s incoming freshmen. Coaches have praised his leadership and growth, noting that he’s ready to step into a more prominent position.
“Sean has really embraced the opportunity in front of him,” said head coach Jon Scheyer. “He’s more confident, more vocal, and he’s attacking every workout like he has something to prove.”
With Duke expected to lean on a young roster that includes stars like Cooper Flagg and Isaiah Evans, Stewart’s experience and toughness will be invaluable. His ability to anchor the defense, rebound at a high level, and contribute as a lob threat and rim runner could make him one of the most improved players in the ACC.
As the Blue Devils gear up for another title chase, Sean Stewart may very well be one of the key X-factors in determining just how far they can go.
