Duke Freshman Caleb Foster Expected to Take on Bigger Role in 2025–26 Season
As the Duke Blue Devils prepare for another title-contending season, rising sophomore Caleb Foster is poised to step into a significantly larger role. After a promising freshman year, the 6-foot-5 combo guard is expected to shoulder more offensive and leadership responsibilities following the departure of several upperclassmen and NBA-bound players.
Foster, a former five-star recruit out of California, played in 32 games during the 2024–25 season, averaging 7.4 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in limited minutes. Despite a modest stat line, he demonstrated flashes of brilliance with his quick first step, high-level court vision, and confident shooting stroke—especially from beyond the arc, where he shot 39%.
With Jared McCain declaring for the NBA Draft and Jeremy Roach transferring out, Foster’s development will be critical to Duke’s backcourt success next season. Coaches and teammates have praised his maturity, work ethic, and commitment to improvement during offseason training.
Head coach Jon Scheyer commented on Foster’s progression during spring workouts, saying, “Caleb is ready for the spotlight. He’s been working tirelessly, and we believe he’s going to take a big leap.”
Foster’s improved decision-making and defensive consistency will be key to his expanded role, especially as Duke incorporates new five-star freshmen into the lineup. As a returning player with experience in Scheyer’s system, Foster will likely be asked to help facilitate the offense while continuing to improve as a scorer and on-ball defender.
For Duke fans, Caleb Foster represents both stability and potential—a player with the tools to become a star while embodying the program’s tradition of developing elite guards. If his offseason progress is any indication, Foster could be the breakout player who helps lead the Blue Devils deep into March once again.
