Duke Announces Cooper Flagg’s Status For NCAA Tournament

Duke University’s basketball team has been navigating the challenges of the postseason with the uncertain status of star freshman Cooper Flagg, who suffered a left ankle injury during the ACC Tournament. However, recent updates suggest a positive outlook for Flagg’s availability in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

Flagg’s Injury and Immediate Impact

In the ACC Tournament quarterfinals against Georgia Tech, Flagg exited late in the first half after rolling his ankle. He was subsequently sidelined for Duke’s semifinal and championship games. Head coach Jon Scheyer described the injury as a severe sprain, leading to concerns about Flagg’s postseason availability.

NCAA’s Assurance on Flagg’s Availability

Addressing concerns about Flagg’s status, Dan Gavitt, NCAA senior vice president of men’s basketball, stated that communications from Duke and the ACC indicate Flagg will be available for the NCAA Tournament. Gavitt emphasized that this information should not impact Duke’s seeding in the tournament.

Duke’s Performance Amidst Injuries

Despite Flagg’s absence, Duke secured a 74-71 victory over North Carolina in the ACC Tournament semifinals. The team maintained a substantial lead, withstood a UNC rally, and benefited from a crucial lane violation by UNC’s Jae’Lyn Withers in the final moments.

Looking Ahead to the NCAA Tournament

With the NCAA Tournament on the horizon, Duke fans can anticipate Flagg’s return to bolster the team’s championship aspirations. The Blue Devils’ resilience during his absence showcases their depth and adaptability, positioning them as strong contenders in the national championship race.
