The Cowboys enter the last year of quarterback Dak Prescott’s deal at a cap number of $55.455 million by choosing to take a minor pay-cap kick in 2024. The Cowboys appear content to let him finish the contract and wait to see what happens, as they do not have the option to tag him in 2025 and do not currently appear to be inclined to extend it.
If the Cowboys were forced to sign Dak to an extension, Dak had a lot of clout. He will have less leverage to get them to agree to a settlement that is fair if, as it appears, they have chosen to wait things out and take a chance in 2025. What price will someone put on him? This season, Kirk Cousins joined the Falcons from the Vikings. His yearly salary is $45 million, which is $10 million less than the high-end average at the moment. The Cowboys may have chosen to wait and see if another team would extend an offer of that magnitude to Dak if he had intended to use his enormous salary cap figure and his strong performance (during the regular season) to catch or surpass the current maximum amount of $55 million annually.
Even if he departs, he will still be worth more than $50 million in 2019. It would be easier to manage the dead money if he was resigned before the vacuum triggers.
They might or might not do so. As of right now, they’ve chosen to ignore their dread.forcing them to pay more than they would like to because of his existing cap number or his impending departure. When March rolls around in March of next year, Dak will have to choose between accepting the best offer from the Cowboys and starting again with a new franchise that will be far less well-known across the country than the one he plays for now.
