Defensive Overhaul: Acknowledging Past Mistakes

The 2024 season was marked by defensive inconsistencies that undermined Miami’s performance. Despite boasting a potent offense, the Hurricanes struggled defensively, leading to several close losses. Cristobal admitted that the defensive schemes were predictable and lacked the necessary complexity to challenge opponents effectively.

New Leadership: Corey Hetherman Takes the Helm

To address these issues, Cristobal appointed Corey Hetherman as the new defensive coordinator. Hetherman, previously with Minnesota, brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the team. His defensive philosophy emphasizes aggression and adaptability, aiming to create a more dynamic and unpredictable defense.

Implementing a Four-Down Front

One of the significant changes under Hetherman’s leadership is the transition to a four-down front. Cristobal noted that last year’s defensive alignment, which often utilized odd fronts, was ineffective and hindered the performance of key players like Rueben Bain and Ahkeem Mesidor. The new scheme is designed to leverage the strengths of these players, allowing them to play more freely and aggressively.

Emphasizing Speed and Aggression

The revamped defense focuses on speed and aggression. Hetherman describes the defensive approach as “launch technique,” prioritizing quick, vertical movements over traditional read-and-react methods. This strategy aims to disrupt opposing offenses early and often, creating a more formidable defensive presence on the field.

Carson Beck’s Role in the Transition

While much attention has been on the defensive changes, quarterback Carson Beck’s integration into the team is also crucial. Although he is recovering from an injury, Beck’s leadership and understanding of the game have been assets during the transition. Cristobal has praised Beck’s football IQ and his proactive involvement in team activities, indicating that Beck is poised to play a significant role in the team’s future success.

Looking Ahead

With the defensive overhaul underway and key players like Beck stepping into leadership roles, Miami is positioning itself for a stronger 2025 season. Cristobal’s commitment to addressing past shortcomings and implementing strategic changes reflects a proactive approach to rebuilding the team. The combination of a revamped defense and emerging leadership offers hope for a more competitive and resilient Hurricanes squad in the upcoming season.
