David Moyes has given the lowdown on Kalvin Phillips amidst the midfielder’s worrying start to life at West Ham United.
West Ham boss David Moyes brought Kalvin Phillips to the London Stadium from Manchester City on loan in the January transfer window.
David Moyes makes baffling Kalvin Phillips admission
The Scot addressed the media after the Man City owned midfielder’s slightly concerning start at West Ham.
And Moyes suggested that Phillips isn’t currently at the level he needs to be:
“We knew Kalvin Phillips would need a little bit of time. He got the best part of 70 minutes against Bournemouth and that will help him along. He’s a top player, an established England international, and there are no question marks about him as a player. It’s just a case of him needing a bit of game time and getting those opportunities to get back to his levels.”
If Moyes knew that Phillips would need time to get up to speed, why on earth did he start him against Bournemouth last week?
It’s just an utterly bizarre admission to make from the Scot as far as I’m concerned. It has been clear for anyone to see during our last two games that Phillips is nowhere near the levels he needs to be.
It’s no surprise – he hasn’t started a Premier League game since May after all! I love the 28-year-old and rate him very highly indeed. However, he will definitely need a few weeks to get up to speed as far as playing games at the highest level is concerned.
There is absolutely no way that David Moyes should have started Kalvin Phillips on Thursday night, and the Scot’s latest remarks on the midfielder just prove to me that he’s not entirely sure what he’s doing right now when it comes down to team selection.
